Get out and play
Welcome to TAASC!

Here are some important notes to help your experience:

Our website is your best source for meeting times and places, weekend trip dates, photos, membership forms, and information about our current projects including the Better Bike Project.

Unless otherwise noted, students should be at Evergreen Community Charter School on Saturdays 8:30am for weekend trips. Pick-up time is 3pm on Sundays. Please try to be on time. Families often carpool if they live nearby.

Summer trip information pick-off and drop-off times will be announced on the website and via email. Please feel free to email us with any questions: ashevilletaasc@gmail.com.

The gear and food lists on the website will help your child plan for weekend trips. This clothing list is quite extensive, so we will help your child go through gear on Saturday morning, and we might suggest that some items get left behind in his or her duffle bag if they are not needed for this trip. Regardless of the time of year, we always suggest a fleece jacket (even a light one in the summer) and a warm hat.  Avoid bringing clothes made of cotton.

A headlamp (not a flashlight) is essential for our trips. There are inexpensive models that you can get at stores such as Target. Please ask if you have any questions about this.

Parents—especially of younger students—often join us on weekend trips. We welcome this involvement and enjoy seeing the connections in families.  Here are some tips for a good experience:

If you have your own gear (such as a tent, sleeping bag, backpack), please bring it on trips.  Also, we ask parents to bring their own food (including dinners) if you are coming on an overnight trip. Some parents bring pasta or make burritos with beans, salsa, and cheese. This allows students to have control of their own cooking experience with the group.  Please feel free to ask us about suggestions.

Students will have times in which they will be frustrated or struggling while on trips. This may happen when they are hiking with full backpacks, cleaning up pots and pans, or navigating with the group.  This is natural and part of the experiential education process.  We enjoy having parents help students while we are out there, but please do not “rescue” them by solving the problems for them. These can often be the key moments when students learn responsibility and how to work and think through problems on their own.

We look forward to getting to know your family throughout the years! Please feel free to call or email if you have any questions. (828-299-9844 / ashevilletaasc@gmail.com)
